When do you plan? As soon as you have decided to hold a fundraiser. Don't leave it till the week before, half of what you should have planned for will have already passed. You need to see the development of your fundraising plan as the first step in the process, the first shot in the war.

Fundraising is a discipline and should be approached as such. Don't skimp on any aspect of the project, including the plan.

How do you plan? What do you put in it? Well the first thing is that you plan in writing. If it's in your head it doesn't exist. It needs to be available so that anyone can read it and see what is going to happen and how. What if you had an accident or illness and couldn't take part? Could someone take over the fundraiser at the last minute and run it as well as you?

If you have a well developed written plan the answer should be yes.

What do you plan for? Well, everything.

Start with your goal. What is it that you are trying to achieve? Not what you are going to do with the money but what will your fundraiser do. How much money do you need to raise? How will your fundraiser do that?

If you are selling candles what is your profit per candle? What are your expenses. How many candles do you need to sell to reach the target you need to reach. Can you sell this many candles realistically? Where will you sell them? How will you sell them? To whom will you sell them? How many potential buyers are there at your location?

Who will be involved and how, and when. What are their skills? What is their availability time wise? How much can they do of each task, and when can they do it?

What is your timeline? When will the fundraiser be held? What needs to happen before this? How long will that take and when will it take place? Is there anything else that needs to happen first?

There are dozens, or hundreds, of fundraising experts who write interesting and informative articles about fundraising and put them on the net for others to read. Problem is, it's extremely hard to find all these articles and it can take you hours of your time searching them out.
