Fundraising is becoming more and more a necessity for so many small, and large, organisations these days. Unfortunately it seems that the days of government largess are over. Budget restrictions are everywhere, and anywhere that the government can cut costs by reducing funding it will.

This political climate of budget restrictions has impacted on many organisations, and fundraising is now commonly a part of the life of so many of these organisations. Where staff could be put to implementing measures designed for the progress of the mission, now so many resources need to be diverted to finding the money.

And of course this means that the competition for the fundraising dollar is becoming fiercer. Donor apathy more common. People are tired of being approached on every corner to buy this or support that. Eventually they wear down.

An organisation which needs to exist on funds that it needs to raise itself will find it hard in these circumstances. Unless they approach fundraising in a way that sets them above the rest and which allows them to compete successfully for the available fundraising dollars.

That means that you need to be professional fundraisers. That doesn't mean that you need to leave your job to work full time as fundraisers, although many do, just that you need to approach your fundraising professionally.

A professional fundraiser knows their job and their market inside out. They know how to press the right buttons to be able to run successful fundraisers time after time. They know the psychology of fundraising.

And the small organisations need to compete in this environment. Small organisations, such as say a scout group, need to be able to compete with all the other small organisations out there which run constant fundraisers to stay affloat.

It's no longer good enough to run another raffle. That won't cut it any more. People are tired of raffle tickets now.



So you need new ideas and new ways to implement old ideas. You need a good battle plan. You need to learn how to approach fundraising as a professional, even if you aren't.
